The Loyal Opposition, Feb 5, Jordan Wilkins, TDCCA Chair

TLO S03E04 This episode of The Loyal Opposition welcomes Jordon Wilkerson, the Chair of

the Tennessee Democratic County Chairs Association (TDCCA). They will discuss:

The role of the TDCCA

The recent election of the new TNDP Chair

County Democratic Party Reorganization

How you can get involved at the county level

Your host, Len Assante, begins the show with a round up of recent bills put forth in the TN

Legislature. Especially worrisome are two bills.

Tennessee Republican leaders have set their sights on overturning U.S. Supreme Court

precedent with proposed legislation focused on denying immigrant children without legal

permanent status equal access to a public education.

On Tuesday, Tennessee House Majority Leader William Lamberth and state Sen. Bo Watson,

submitted a bill that would allow school districts and charter schools to “opt out” of enrolling

students who lack permanent legal status.

A separate bill from Rep. Gino Bulso of Brentwood and Sen. Joey Hensley of Hohenwald, both

Republicans, would require parents of children without legal status to pay public school tuition

and fees.

The Tennessee legislature just passed a bill appears to be blatantly unconstitutional. It requires

criminal penalties for any local public officials who vote for sanctuary policies where

municipalities may refuse to cooperate with federal immigration policies. This law drives a stake

in the heart of representative government. What is next? Will it be illegal to vote against

anything the governor supports? This is an amazingly bad law and certainly unconstitutional.

Len and Jordon discuss:

What is the TN Democratic County Chairs Association?

How does it support the county parties?

What role does it play at the state level?

Jordon also takes us behind the scenes on the recent election of Rachel Campbell as the new

TN Democratic Party Chair and highlights the role and focus of the state party chair.

County party reorganization is happening this Spring and Len and Jordon discuss the process

and the importance of being involved in the process and how you can make a difference at the

local level.
